有人称它为“黑材料”，有人认为这是“抹黑”，有人亦称之为"investigative reporting"(调查式报道)。

    不论你把这些丑闻新闻当作什么，最近你打开报章，都尽是这类报道。不是这个候选人有僭建、婚外情，便是对手有利益冲突不申报，又或是搭飞机、坐游艇、租平屋。

    智慧界吹波糖

    这些消息重要吗？相信公众大致都认为重要。因为若然调查属实，这些事件便反映现任或未来政府领导人的诚信操守。这样的看法有它的道理。

   但若你按Joseph Epstein在Gossip: The Untrivial Pursuit中的角度看，这些大家认为紧要(relevant)的消息，都只不过是gossip。

    相信大部分人都不同意这个看法。Gossip是闲话、聊天、流言蜚语，是“八卦”的人做的无聊事，背后说人闲话，不可信亦无关宏旨。这与谈政治人物的言行错失怎可相提并论？

   Joseph Epstein这样描述gossip：

    Gossip has of course long had a ferociously bad press. Trivial has its subject matter been deemed, vulgar and wayward its practitioners inevitably designated. The intellectual equivalent of chewing gum - such has been among the many unkind things it has been called.

    Ferociously解凶残的；trivial是琐碎的；vulgar是粗鄙的；wayward解不规矩的。Gossip向来都被无情批判为无关痛痒的事，讲gossip的人都被认为是无教养、无规矩。Gossip就像是智慧界的吹波糖。

   背信“报料”

    没有人想承认，但人人都喜欢听是非、讲闲话，而在政治上，gossips却非无关痛痒：

   What is perhaps less well known is the role that gossip plays in the mechanics(结构) of politics - its role, that is, in the everyday life of getting deals done or killed, ending electoral(竞选的) hopes, or forcing retirement from public life.

   政治上的gossip影响事情的成败，能粉碎选举的希望，也可以令政客下台。它的影响力就是如此的大。而政治gossip的真正面目，就是leaks。

    Leaks是泄漏资料。大部分丑闻新闻都是源自“报料”，即是leaks。Joseph Epstein认为，"leaks are little more than gossip turned to the service and ends of politics"(泄漏资料只不过是用来达到政治目的的流言蜚语)。

    迫使美国总统尼克逊(Richard Nixon)下台的Watergate incident(水门事件)，是由神秘人提供资料给《华盛顿邮报》记者Bob Woodward和Carl Bernstein揭发。这位被称为"Deep Throat"的报料人，后来被发现是联邦调查局的高级官员William Mark Felt Sr.。

   向传媒“报料”的人都认为自己是Deep Throat，但Joseph Epstein说有一点要留意的，是很多“报料”行为的本质，其实都是背信︰

   Not all but much gossip has the tincture(色彩、特徵) of betrayal. And so do many leaks.

   A leak represents a disloyalty(不忠的行为), if not to those people whom the leak will damage, to whom no loyalty may be owed or felt, but often to the code connected with the job one holds that put one in possession of the leaked material to begin with.
